NASPD Convention Room Block Update: We still have a few, very limited rooms at the JW Marriott starting on Thursday through Sunday, but for those who want to arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday, we have a block of rooms at the Marriott Villa’s II. They share the same extended property as the JW Marriott. The walk is about 10 minutes from the Villa’s lobby to the JW lobby. Keep in mind, the Villa’s do not have room services and the rooms are more basic than a typical hotel we would choose for our conference. Alternatively, we have a corporate rate negotiated at Hotel Paseo, an Autograph hotel. It is a 10 minute drive from the JW Marriott, but it is in the middle of the El Paseo shopping and restaurant district. If you want to spend some time getting to know the area, this is another good option for you. We still have limited rooms available at the JW Marriott starting Tuesday through Sunday, but they are not part of our room block and are at a much higher rate. If you are interested in one of those rooms, please give us a call. You can also try travel sites as they often buy up blocks of rooms at various rates that the hotel does not have access to. Because guests are canceling reservations periodically, rooms can become available on nights that were previously sold out. We apologize to anyone who has encountered trouble booking rooms for our convention. We realize some people are confused about why we would run out of rooms in our block so early. We thought it might be helpful to clarify how we establish our room block for each meeting. When we contract with hotels, we have to guess two years in advance exactly how many rooms we need for each night. If we don't fill up our block, we pay for any empty rooms. Just one empty room over three nights would cost the NASPD over $1,000. Booking enough rooms to ensure everyone has a room regardless of the turnout could be a financial disaster. Instead, we look at our hotel reservation history. We have already well exceeded the total number of rooms blocked from our last two conventions.
